Writers of Influence

As a writer, one must read widely and read daily. Over the years, many writers have influenced my style and the content of my writing. As my Writer's Craft teacher, Ms. Sajo, said: "Writers are liars, thieves and addicts." This is where the second part of that comes true :D~.

Ann M. Martin: One of my earliest influences in life would be, of course, Ann M. Martin's The Baby-sitter's Club back when I was a child. I can rightfully claim that I have read more than 100 books in the series. I was obssessed with this series. My favourite character would be Claudia, because of her artistic background, then Mary Anne. I loved the characters in this series, and I loved how Martin would always change the point of view for every book in the series. My favourites from her would not be from the Baby-sitters Club though. It ended up being the California Diaries (although I only read the first diaries from every character.
E.B. White: While I have only been exposed to his children's books, they were by far some of the best children's novels I've ever read. I read Charlotte's Web back in Grade 3 and I fell in love with it. So much so that I went and read both Stuart Little and The Trumpet of the Swan. The latter became my favourite because of its musical content. White and Stunk's Elements of Style is also an excellent resource :D.
Bruce Coville: Okay, so I haven't read a lot of his stuff. However, The Unicorn Chronicles is just awesome. I read these in my early childhood, and I loved them. So much so that this series has become one of my favourites of all time. I was originally supposed to study the first book, and only read the first chapter as a class. For some reason, my teacher forgot about it, but I borrowed the book and read it in my spare time. I'm glad I did. It was this book that influences my love for unicorns and mythical creatures.
Gail Carson Levine: Another children's writer! I first read Ella Enchanted, influenced by a request from a classmate, and I LOVED it. There's something very enchanting about her writing style; I loved it. Another big influence for my love of fantasy stories and fairy tales.
Charlotte Bronte: Jane Eyre is by far my favourite novel of all time, and I find that really strange considering my usual tastes. I first read her sister's novel Wuthering Heights after I read the Wuthering Heights arc in the Glass Mask manga. I was very pleased with Emily Bronte's novel, so I wandered to her sister: Charlotte Bronte. Although this book is very long, I didn't find it boring at all. It had a very personal and real feeling to the writing and storytelling.
Neil Gaiman: Although none of his novels seem to be one of my favourites, this man is an amazing writer. I first caught wind of him when my friend recommended The Sandman to me. What an amazing comic series. Then I went to read his novels, and I loved every one of them. His writing style is one of my favourites.
